Alex Gilbert travels from New Zealand to a small village in Kazakhstan on a journey that is both personal and uncertain. After discovering a link to his grandmother through his uncle in Ukraine, Alex sets out to uncover more about his family history. His birth mother, Tatiana, had reconnected with her brother several years earlier, but this journey was Alex’s chance to learn what happened to their mother, his grandmother Raisa, who moved to Kazakhstan.
